"Adoption" the negative connotation

A few days ago during Christmas break (after shooting off rockets with his dad)my son Preston came in after playing outside and said “it doesn’t even feel like we are adopted!” I hugged him and said, of course not, you are MINE!

He has also come home from school before telling me that people don’t want to be in his friend because he is “adopted.” I really don’t know what to say to that one. I guess some people still have a negative connotation about “being adopted.”

I remember growing up in the 80s and hearing remarks on TV and from people at school about someone being adopted, and it always seemed to be a negative thing. I notice remarks like that more because I am an adoptive mother and I am amazed how much the phrase is still used negatively. I think a little niche of “political correctness” has been overlooked ~

(My cute Preston being funny)

For me, “he was adopted” means, I chose you, I love you, and you are MINE!

  1. I know your story...but reading it has brought me to tears Camille. I had your families 'sealing' picture on my fridge for a long while. I would always look at it and think...they always belonged to you and Mykel.

When you talked about when you first met the boys and they first met you...the connection was there because you had met them before this lifetime. Just think, before you came to earth, Preston may have told you, "Mom, I am coming. BE PATIENT! I will be coming to you in a route different than many babies come. I love you and I'll see you soon." You are a very blessed woman. You have become stronger because of your faith, love and your patience. It's great you are sharing your story. You will be a strength to many!

I have never thought negatively about adoption...shame on those who do.
Love you (and miss you), Dana

  2. Wow, I've never had anyone not want to be my friend because I am adopted. I have experienced other issues with people criticizing me for being adopted but that was in my twenties when I was mature enough to handle it.
What those children said to Preston is uncalled for.
Sometimes people just don't know any better than to say hurtful, ignorant things. You give Preston a hug from me.
