"Adoption" the negative connotation

A few days ago during Christmas break (after shooting off rockets with his dad)my son Preston came in after playing outside and said “it doesn’t even feel like we are adopted!” I hugged him and said, of course not, you are MINE!

He has also come home from school before telling me that people don’t want to be in his friend because he is “adopted.” I really don’t know what to say to that one. I guess some people still have a negative connotation about “being adopted.”

I remember growing up in the 80s and hearing remarks on TV and from people at school about someone being adopted, and it always seemed to be a negative thing. I notice remarks like that more because I am an adoptive mother and I am amazed how much the phrase is still used negatively. I think a little niche of “political correctness” has been overlooked ~

(My cute Preston being funny)

For me, “he was adopted” means, I chose you, I love you, and you are MINE!
